Summary of Silent Hill Transmission By Konami

A couple of days ago, Konami held an online event to announce their latest project in gaming for gamers, especially those who are a fan of their survival horror IP, Silent Hill. Konami announces 5 new projects. All related to Silent Hill. The announcements reveal 4 new games and a movie. Those are:

  1. Silent Hill 2 Remake
  2. Silent Hill: Townfall
  3. Return To Silent Hill
  4. Silent Hill: Ascension, and
  5. Silent Hill F

Silent Hill 2 Remake

Silent Hill 2 Remake

This remake is being developed by the Bloober team. From the trailer, we can expect that this is a 1:1 remake of the original game, storywise at least. If you were familiar with the original game, watching the trailer is like watching the original game cutscenes but with better graphics. However, the gameplay has been changed from tank control to over-the-shoulder view similar to Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes. This is most likely to adjust to more modern audiences as tank control is not popular nowadays. The release date hasn't been announced yet, but you already can wishlist the game for PS5, and Steam indicate that it will be released soon.

Silent Hill: Townfall

Silent Hill: Townfall

Instead of showing the game, the trailer for Townfall feels more like an announcement that they are developing the game. There is nothing in the trailer other than a man talking on a radio, the radio itself, and a shot of a beach that slowly turns red. The trailer also gives very little information about the game other than it being developed by Annapurna and more info will be coming in 2023.

Return To Silent Hill

Return to Silent Hill is a movie project with the first Silent Hill movie director, Christophe Gans. It seems that it will be using Silent Hill 2 as source material. No trailer has yet been revealed. Only a handful of concept designs and an interview with the director.

Silent Hill Ascension

Silent Hill: Ascension

The trailer didn't explain what is Ascension supposed to be, but judging from the trailer it looks like an interactive movie where people online can watch together live and decide how the story goes.

Silent Hill F

Silent Hill: F

The same with Townfall, Silent Hill F feels like an announcement that they are developing the game. From the trailer, you can tell that this is Silent Hill in Japan.

Not A Single Game Is Being Developed By Konami Themself

I noticed this after a while but none of these new Silent Hill games is being developed by Konami themself. All of these titles are being outsourced to third parties, even Silent Hill: F. The Silent Hill in Japan. At first, I thought that Konami no longer have a gaming department after Kojima's departure in 2015. However, as I look a bit into it, Konami still releasing video games like PES and Yu-Gi-Oh. This makes me wonder what is Konami going to do moving forward with their IP. I also think about whether Konami pays these developers to make the new Silent Hill game or the opposite, these developer is paying Konami to acquire a license so they can develop a survival horror game and call it Silent Hill.
